Sports news assistants, D.M. Register

The Des Moines Register is seeking news assistants for its sports department. These news assistants perform a combination of three tasks: compiling sports agate results, basic video editing, and possibly some basic reporting and writing. The job is 12-16 hours/week and pays $11/hour. Typical hours are 7-11 p.m. Ability to work Friday night during football season is a must.

Digital media fellowship, Mother Jones (NYC)

Mother Jones is looking for an all-star digital-media fellow to keep us current on social platforms, and enhance our multimedia coverage of breaking news—especially with snappy, smart video. This fellow will work closely with Mother Jones‘ digital news team in our New York City office. You’ll learn about every aspect of modern online publishing, collaborating with seasoned editors and reporters. You’ll also attend regular skill-building sessions covering topics that span the operations of a media organization.

 Desired Skills:

  • Video editing experience, including familiarity with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, (especially Premiere)
  • Evidence of hands-on production, including writing for video and shooting in the field
  • Stellar writing ability, as demonstrated by published work
  • Comfort with content management systems
  • A zeal for online news and media
  • A working knowledge of HTML and experience with Photoshop
  • Endless enthusiasm for digital storytelling languages like memes, GIFS, and Vines.
  • Deep familiarity with social media
  • Previous reporting experience a strong plus

 Ideal candidates will have experience working in a fast-paced digital newsroom. We’ll want you to bring some skills to the table: Maybe you’ve got experience as a quick-hit blogger, you’ve worked in social media, or you’ve more-than-dipped your toes in video-editing software. This fellow will work in the New York City office.

Assistant editor, audio-video creation studio (St. Louis)

90°W, a leading motion media creation studio in St. Louis, is looking for an assistant editor.

This position requires a bit of everything to assist our senior editors in all of the tasks necessary to bring audio and visual files into our system, organize them, get them out the door and then archive and catalog them for future retrieval. It also includes handling direct client requests for revisions, updates & versions to pieces that we have produced.

Our work environment is creative, collaborative, hectic and demanding. We strive for excellence in everything we do. This is a critical position in our organization, because the Assistant Editor is often the last person to touch our product before it goes out the door to our clients. Extraordinary attention to detail is critical. This position requires a high degree of intelligence and an ability to handle pressure under deadline.

Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are mandatory.

  • Great computer skills with the ability & desire to learn new things quickly.

  • At least two years experience with Avid Media Composer or Adobe Premiere.

  • Production technology – cameras, DIT, workflow, etc. Ingest efficiencies for Alexa, RED. Keep 90-owned production equipment organized and maintained. Oversee check out, check in of production equipment.
  • Collaborate with creative team to grow 90’s expertise with VR, AR, 360 content and other emerging technologies
  • Maintain company’s wordpress website
  • Contribute to social media and blog posting
  • Monitor and maintain our IT systems – more than 14 workstations – connected to central server

Compensation: competitive salary, plus health and retirement benefits. Schedule: 8-hour workdays, Monday – Friday, may be scheduled to begin at 9am, 10am or 11am, depending on client needs. Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet work demands is essential.

Summer communication internships at Iowa Secretary of State’s office

The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office in Des Moines is offering two paid internships that can be done for credit instead if desired.

Summer 2017 Social Media/Multimedia Projects Internship

 This internship at the Iowa Secretary of State’s office would consist of managing the social media and online presence, content production and marketing for multiple projects.

 The internship is for the Summer Semester of 2017, however it may start earlier and there is possibility of renewal if desired.

  • Monitoring and Management of multiple social media pages
  • Regular content production including but not limited to images, copy and video
  • Planning out long term strategy and content calendars for social media
  • Keeping track of and responding to constituent interactions

Experience in videography and graphic design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Apple Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere preferred.

Background in Marketing, Political Science, Communications, Graphic Design, Videography or Journalism is a plus.

Summer 2017 Business Services Communications Internship

With the Secretary of State’s Office being the small business portal of Iowa, we must celebrate the importance of entrepreneurs and small business owners. The Business Services Intern is responsible for contacting small businesses to create entrepreneurship related content for the Iowa Secretary of State’s social media pages. Additional responsibilities include assisting office manager with business services work and organizational tasks.

  • Creating social media content promoting entrepreneurship and Iowa small business
  • Interviewing small businesses

About the internship:
Our summer internship program, known as Velocity, is a 16-week agency immersion designed to give participants real experience and a chance to demonstrate their talent as advertising professionals. The Velocity program is a full-time, paid experience available to college graduates (graduating on or before June 1, 2017.) The internship begins June 5, 2017 and ends September 22, 2017.

Account Manager: We are looking for a stellar creative and strategic thinker who is open to considering all media spaces. Spring and summer communication internships, ACLU of Iowa

Interns will have the opportunity to work with the communications director on a range of significant issues and projects.  Ideally our internships would range from 8-13 weeks. This position is part-time with highly flexible weekly hours negotiable. Interns are encouraged to work with their schools for course credits, independent study credits, and/or funding for the internship, as it is unpaid. Interns will be provided with free parking.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interns will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working on a variety of communications and outreach efforts.  They will potentially learn to assist on all aspects of communications, marketing, public and media relations, outreach, and public education, as well as other projects as assigned.

We do our best to tailor our communications internships to encompass the particular interest of each intern: marketing, design, public relations, social justice, law and government, photography, video, political science, and more.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

This internship welcomes applications from a variety of majors and areas of study. It is open to all current students who have completed at least one year of college and possess the following:

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Strong computer skills, strong social media abilities, and a skill for  web-based research
  • The ability to work with a wide range of people
  • The initiative to see projects through to completion
  • An interest in advocating for civil liberties
