Fall internships at Secretary of State’s office

Two fall internships are available at the Iowa Secretary of State¹s Office.

The internships are based in Des Moines. These internships are normally paid, but can be done for credit instead if desired. 

1. Fall Social Media/Multimedia Projects Internship

This internship at the Iowa Secretary of State’s office would consist of managing the social media and online presence, content production and marketing for multiple projects.

The internship is for the Fall Semester of 2018, however it may start earlier and there is possibility of renewal if desired.

  • Monitoring and Management of multiple social media pages 
  • Regular content production including but not limited to images, copy and video
  • Planning out long term strategy and content calendars for social media
  • Keeping track of and responding to constituent interactions

Experience in videography and graphic design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Apple Final Cut Pro, or Adobe Premiere preferred.

Background in Marketing, Political Science, Communications, Graphic Design, or Journalism is a plus.

 2. Fall 2018 Business Services Communications Internship

With the Secretary of State’s Office being the small business portal of Iowa, we must celebrate the importance of entrepreneurs and small business owners. The Business Services Intern is responsible for contacting small businesses to create entrepreneurship related content for the Iowa Secretary of State’s social media pages. Additional responsibilities include assisting office manager with business services work and organizational tasks.

  • Creating social media content promoting entrepreneurship and Iowa small business
  • Interviewing small businesses
  • Organization of our social media content calendars
  • Creating content and managing the Secretary of State’s LinkedIn page
  • Entering new business services accounts

The internship is for the Fall Semester of 2018, however it may start earlier and there is possibility of renewal if desired.

Background in Business, Marketing, Communications, or Journalism is a plus.

Agriculture director, Minnesota radio stations

Alpha Media – Redwood Falls, MN is seeking an Agricultural Director for our two radio stations. The ideal candidate is a news/communications professional with a strong background in agriculture and enthusiasm for informing both agricultural and non-agricultural audiences about what is going on in the industry that brings us our food, fiber, and fuel. This job opportunity is well-suited for someone with a diverse range of skills, or a desire to gain such skills through the daily experience of working as an on-air radio talent, a news writer, an interviewer, and a digital content producer.

Responsibilities of this position may include the following:

  • Conduct interviews with agribusiness news sources and convert information obtained into stories, reports, or long-form interviews for use on-air and on the website.
  • Provide up-to-the minute market reports throughout the day.
  • Convert information obtained through news releases and other sources into stories and reports for use on-air and/or on the website.
  • Edit and refine audio for use on-air and/or on the website.
  • Download audio feeds from outside sources.
  • Load audio into audio folders for use by others, including for on-air purposes.
  • Post material to the website and social media.
  • Produce photos, videos, graphic images, and other materials for use on the website and for other purposes such as station promotion.
  • Perform regular air shift as assigned, including two half-hour farm programs; fill in as necessary.
  • Various productions tasks as needed or requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Requirements for this position include the following:

  • Able to develop on-going relationships with local, state, and national officials.
  • Ability to relate to listeners from a wide range of demographics.
  • Knowledge of all applicable FCC rules and regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a team player and work well with all levels of management.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office programs.
  • Knowledge of agriculture and related issues.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle constantly evolving deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preference may be given to candidates who have the above experience plus the following:

  • Previous experience in broadcast media.
  • Previous agricultural reporting and/or writing experience.

Media production project manager, William Penn University

Newspaper reporters, Mitchell, S.D.

The Daily Republic newspaper in Mitchell, S.D., is looking for reporters interested in getting experience in community journalism. The Daily Republic is a six-day-a-week paper owned by Forum Communications Co.

Student assistant for digital and social content, University Communications

Department: University Communications
Term: Spring 2018
Hours: 20 hours per week, with flexible scheduling during normal campus hours of operation
Salary: $9 per hour
Supervisor: Jason Nunemaker, Assistant Director – Content Management

Essential Functions:

  • Research, write, edit and coordinate a wide variety of content for digital and social media, including producing short videos
  • Assist with the redesign of the University’s alumni website, including rewriting content to align with the University’s new brand platform and strategizing and implementing ways to improve alumni’s experience using the site
  • Assist with email communications to alumni and other targeted audiences
  • Help build various webpages and forms, as needed
  • Though this position will report to the Digital Communications team, the student assistant will also work closely with the Alumni and Donor Communications team.
  • The student assistant will ideally start the week of Monday, Jan. 29, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will end by Friday, May 11.

Requirements:

  • All applicants must be enrolled in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. (The position is being funded by SJMC scholarship funds.)
  • Applicants must have completed at least one full year (preferably two full years) of undergraduate study, including coursework in areas related to the requirements of the position. They should also have some prior employment experience, with preference given to those who have completed a prior internship or have had other pre-professional experience with emphasis on the specific area of expertise.
  • Applicants must be able to prove strong technical skills, typically through a portfolio of samples specific to the role they desire (i.e. writing, social media, etc.)
  • The student hired must be confident and mature, and be able to act professionally at all times. Because the department handles sensitive and sometimes confidential information, student assistants are held to the highest level of trust and discretion.
