Miss GawkerMother Jones is looking for an all-star social media fellow to help keep us current on social platforms, blog for our award-winning website, and enhance our coverage of breaking news. This fellow will work closely with Mother Jones’s digital news team and collaborate alongside seasoned editors and reporters. Aside from helping promote Mother Jones stories, you’ll write your own stories for our website. You’ll also help with web fact-checking and attend regular skill-building sessions covering topics that span the operations of a media organization.

Strategic Communications Fellowship (San Francisco)

 You love news, politics, and investigative reporting. You can’t tear yourself away from a great long-form story or a powerful tweetstorm. You know a killer interview when you see one. You’re a smart, hungry emerging professional determined to use your communication talent and skill to make a difference.

 If this sounds right, you might be Mother Jones’ next strategic communications fellow. This fellow will work with Mother Jones’ communications strategist—in collaboration with staff across the organization—to build buzz for Mother Jones investigations and breaking news, increase our impact, and engage with our audience.

The communications fellow will assist in pitching television and radio appearances, building communication with key organizations and influencers, and identifying events and speaking opportunities for MoJo staff. He or she will help plan and promote Mother Jones events and test out new ways to engage with its readers, while also tracking Mother Jones’ impact and helping submit its journalism for prestigious awards.

This is a unique opportunity to learn and practice strategic communications, project management, and audience engagement skills while helping a major investigative reporting organization tell important stories and increase its impact.

Waukee schools communications internship (deadline extended)

The Waukee School District in suburban Des Moines is looking for an intern to assist with this year’s big projects, which include: writing content and launching a new website, writing content for new marketing material using a new brand identity, creating and writing content for school bond campaign materials and implementing a district-wide social media plan.

Qualifications:   

  • Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space (e.g., YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, WordPress and Pinterest)

  • Proficient computer skills to include: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe

 Description: Waukee Community School District (WCSD) seeks a dynamic, self-starter to assist communication efforts. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of public relations while working for one of the largest school districts in Iowa.

  • Assist in planning and writing content for new district website and newsletters.
  • Assist in maintaining district websites and providing blog support to staff.

Iowa International Center internship

Administration Intern (15-20 hours, unpaid)

Iowa International Center is a non-profit organization that exists to build cultural respect at home and around the world, one person at a time. Each year the Iowa International Center works with over 150 international visitors from more than 60 countries. Qualifications:

  • College student seeking professional experience and/or academic internship credit
  • Background in any of the following (but not limited to): international relations, international business, marketing, non-profit management, journalism/mass communications, information technology, political science, foreign language, finance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be self-directed and work independently while also working as part of a team
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and deadlines, and maintain accurate records
  • Problem solving skills, including the ability to resolve conflicts and recommend an appropriate course of action
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software; knowledge of databases (Salesforce specifically) a plus
  • Cross-cultural living experience and/or knowledge of a foreign language preferred, but not required

Work Schedule:

  • Internships occur during fall, spring, and summer semesters
  • Must commit 15 hours per week; weekly schedule is negotiable and flexible

Event and membership coordinator, Iowa Newspaper Association

 JOB STATEMENT

Coordinates all INF programming and event functions, including the INA Convention & Trade Show, INF seminars and webinars.  Works under the general supervision and direction of the INF Program Director. Exercises initiative and independent judgment in the performance of assigned tasks.  Performs all duties within the objectives, standards and policies of the Association and related entities

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serves as facilitator for webinars and coordinator for seminars.
  • Performs updates to the iMIS membership database and Outlook email address books.3.  Works with outside vendors to secure meeting space/arrangements.
  • Maintains registration database for all INF events and programs and processes follow up reports for each.
  • Communicates with seminar, webinar and convention registrants via e-mail, phone and mail.
  • Confirms receipt of registrations and distributes event details and directions to participants.
  • Works with the Communications Director to create signs and support materials for INF programs.
  • Coordinates all arrangements for board meetings.
  • Works with contest team to coordinate and process the INF Better Newspaper Contests.
  • Works with INF Program Director to coordinate speaker presentations and verify audio/visual needs and travel plans.
  • Assists with the Annual Convention and Trade Show to include event logistics, nametags, signs, processing registrations and onsite coordination.
  • Facilitates the INA Press Release Service, working with The Link to distribute press releases according to customer requests.

 ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This person is also encouraged to be on the lookout for qualified people who would make good additions to the INA staff and to forward these names to the INA Management Team, even if no openings exist.  If a candidate for an opening, who has been referred by one of our staff member, is hired, that staff member will receive a $500 recruitment bonus after the new employee has been on staff for 6 months.
  • Should make every effort to answer everyone’s questions, including member questions the same day they are asked.
  • Assist with development and updates to INF promotional materials using InDesign. 
  • Performs proofreading of printed materials as needed.
  • Serves on the phone rotation.
  • May be asked to help with mailings.
  • Performs any other duties as deemed necessary.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • One to two years of college
  • Between 1 to 2 years’ of experience with event planning or program coordination
  • Previous meeting planning and member services skills preferred
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have good writing, spelling and language skills
  • Experience in layout/design of promotional information helpful
  • Must have MS Office experience (Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook) and general computer skills
  • Must be willing to learn additional software skills (including but not limited to iMIS and event registration sites)
  • Must have accurate data-entry skills
  • Must have good organizational skills; ability to handle multiple projects in a timely manner
  • Must have ability to work well in a team-based environment

ENVIRONMENT

  • Normal office environment with moderate physical requirements

Communications intern, Iowa Automobile Dealers Association
