Internships for women in sports media

The Association for Women in Sports Media is accepting applications for its 2018 scholarship/internship program. AWSM wants to find the nation’s most promising young women who are pursuing sports media careers.

AWSM is a non-profit organization founded as a support network and advocacy group for women in sports. It works to promote and increase diversity in sports media — and one of its hallmark programs is this summer program, which has placed more than 150 women in paid internships since 1990.

AWSM has up to 10 paid internships (all of which are supplemented by $1,000 scholarships) available to female college students who are sophomores and older. The internships fall into three categories: print/digital (reporting at a newspaper/magazine/website), broadcast journalism (production and occasionally on-air work) and media relations (PR, etc. for a team or league).

Last summer, winners spent their summers working at Sports Illustrated, ESPN, the Golf Channel, MLB.com, USA Today and CNN.

In addition to the paid internship and scholarship, recipients will receive complimentary registration and lodging for the 2018 convention.

This is an especially good fit for students who have an interest in business, marketing, management, information technology, international relations, political science, foreign language and/or finance. This intern assists in researching organizations related to the visitors’ fields and contacting these organizations to set up meetings and activities. Visitor programs also require coordination of additional activities such as dinners with local volunteers and optional activities for the groups to pursue during their free time, and this intern is involved in all of these tasks.
