Ankeny Community School District Design and Web Internship (Ankeny, IA)

This internship is primarily focused on the website for the school district, but would also be beneficial to Project Management, Marketing or other Communications majors.

Selection Process: Interview with Communications Director and the Webmaster. Send resume and a minimum of three reasons this internship sounds interesting to you.

Time Period: Summer Internship: June-August. Apply by May 4th.

Hours: Can be flexibly scheduled Monday-Friday between 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. to accommodate the student’s class schedule. 400-hour goal will accommodate most university internship requirements.

Compensation: Unpaid, but will structure internship to meet course credit requirements.

Responsibilities: Under supervision of the Webmaster, and dependent upon demonstrated skill in various areas, the intern will:

Create layouts for best user experience:

  • New web pages (and editing of existing pages).
  • Restructure content on web pages.
  • Troubleshooting errors/bugs.
  • User experience.
  • Other non-recurring communications.
  • Posting web pages and news stories.
  • Monitoring website for functionality.
  • Organize content of district website.
  • Formatting and creating documents and data in google drive.
  • Develop public messages needed for sustained positive public relations. This may include
  • news releases, web page content, social media, special events, etc.
  • Update informational materials on the district, which may include social media, web pages, photos, and other items.
  • Research of new web tools and development of social media to integrate with the district website
  • Other duties as assigned (may include filing, researching, and clerical tasks)

Requirements: Strong technical skills. Preferably a student with a major or minor in computer science, marketing, or some other form of web development. Strong grammar and proofreading skills. Strong research skills.

Preferred Skills: Experience with Google Drive, Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with website navigation/design or user experience. Experience with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, HootSuite, and other programs. Photography or videography experience.


Digital media fellowship, Mother Jones (NYC)

Mother Jones is looking for an all-star digital-media fellow to keep us current on social platforms, and enhance our multimedia coverage of breaking news—especially with snappy, smart video. This fellow will work closely with Mother Jones‘ digital news team in our New York City office. You’ll learn about every aspect of modern online publishing, collaborating with seasoned editors and reporters. You’ll also attend regular skill-building sessions covering topics that span the operations of a media organization.

 Desired Skills:

  • Video editing experience, including familiarity with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, (especially Premiere)
  • Evidence of hands-on production, including writing for video and shooting in the field
  • Stellar writing ability, as demonstrated by published work
  • Comfort with content management systems
  • A zeal for online news and media
  • A working knowledge of HTML and experience with Photoshop
  • Endless enthusiasm for digital storytelling languages like memes, GIFS, and Vines.
  • Deep familiarity with social media
  • Previous reporting experience a strong plus

Part-time web content coordinator

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs is seeking a part-time, temporary website content coordinator who will be responsible for inputting, publishing and maintaining website content.

  • Resize and optimize photographs and digital images for web

  • Input/code pre-written content on website

  • Combine content and images into PDF document using Adobe InDesign

  • Collaborate and work closely with the technical team to maintain site standards with regard to new development

  • Work closely with the project team to manage timelines and meet deadlines


  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills with attention to detail.

Communications / Graphic Design internship at The Rotary Club (West Des Moines)

The Rotary Club of West Des Moines is searching for a communications/graphic intern for a semester long unpaid internship position.

Rotary is an international organization that gives back to the community through volunteerism and provides an avenue to network with business professionals.

We are seeking a talented individual to take our Club Runner “personalized” website to the next level. At completion of the updated webpage, we request a tutorial for several club members on maintenance of the site.  In addition, we need help creating a better presentation and packaging of our potential member and new member guides online.

This is a position that relies heavily on your knowledge of your multimedia skills, your news judgment and your ability to engage audiences through social media. You serve as the digital point person at night, working with the night editor and reporters in keeping all digital platforms up-to-date and fresh using local and wire copy, video, photos, social media and other multimedia content. Urgency, especially during breaking news situations, is essential, and you will be sent into the field to gather news (via text, photos and video) when necessary. You also will be asked to provide a strong layer of digital engagement through social network outlets, primarily Twitter and Facebook. At the end of your shift, you will be charged with “turning over” and ensuring online readers have an informative and engaging experience until the morning shift reporter and editors take over maintenance of the site.

KEY RESULT AREAS include the following:

Beat expertise and enterprise development. You are responsible for learning and understanding the issues that are important and interesting to readers on our different digital platforms. You will be asked to work with the night editor to keep all digital platforms fresh by selecting local and wire stories to highlight, editing and posting multimedia content (including wire and local photo galleries and videos), reporting on developing and breaking local stories, and engaging with readers on social media channels. You will work with the digital team to develop new skills to advance all digital platforms.

Planning: Coordinates with editors daily to identify and package the most relevant and engaging content for readers at night and in the early morning.

Training: You will work in concert with the Digital Editor, Photo Editor, Multimedia Editor and others to provide training as needed for the staff of the Online Department, the Information Center, the non-daily publications and other newspaper personnel.

Administration: Monitors and analyzes digital platform usage reports to identify content interests. This can be done mostly through Site Catalyst updates and tools provided by social media sites. We must always know the traffic trends related to and – as much as possible – our competitive sites in the region.

Quality control:  Responsible for ensuring accuracy, attractiveness, depth and sophistication of digital platforms at night. Ensures clarity of site design through packaging stories on platforms as well as power of headlines written using SEO best practices. Practices Associated Press style and uses correct grammar and spelling. Corrects all mistakes. Uses checklist and as the last person in the Information Center to touch, double-checks all work.

Readership goals/core values. Supports the newspaper’s digital goals, strategic targets and high journalistic standards including the Principles of Ethical Conduct.

Safety: Maintains a safe and clean work environment. Follows safety regulations, actively contributes to work safety. Promotes adherence to all safety and environmental policies and guidelines for fellow employees.

Web design internship at Des Moines Social Club

The Des Moines Social Club (DMSC), a non-profit organization, uses the arts as a catalyst to create unprecedented community engagement. DMSC is a multi-use facility in downtown Des Moines that focuses on the development and retention of local talent. The facility consists of an art gallery (Instinct Gallery), Blackbox  Theatre, and classroom space that is all available for rent by the community. DMSC seeking an intern to help maintain and develop their website.  This is a part-time summer internship without pay. However, there is an opportunity to be held on a retainer at the conclusion of the internship.

Must be knowledgeable in php, html, css with a little bit of javascript. Current site is built on WordPress.  We need help with website maintenance and some new development.
