Media internships at Cocoa Creative (Des Moines, IA)

Cocoa Creative, a visual creative agency based in Des Moines, is seeking creative individuals for media internships during the 2017–18 school year. The internships will start September 25.

We are looking for a candidates to help in one of the following areas:

  • Graphic design for print and digital campaigns,
  • Video camera operation and/or video editing (knowledge of Adobe Premiere and Photoshop are required),
  • Account management and business operations to assist with client management, business development organization and strategy with existing clients, community partnerships, and new business opportunities/partnerships.

Ideal candidates would have some of the following experience:

  • Background in marketing, advertising, or video production
  • An interest in entrepreneurship
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organizational and project management experience
  • Willingness to learn and to adapt quickly to creative changes

Ankeny Community School District Communications Department Internship

This internship is primarily focused on Public Relations for the school district, but would also be beneficial to Journalism, Marketing or other Communications majors.

Responsibilities: Under supervision of the Manager of Communications and Marketing, and dependent upon demonstrated skill in various areas, the intern will:

  • Develop communications timelines, strategies, and creative briefs for projects
  • Create drafts of communications identified by the Communications Coordinator. This may include interviewing staff members to gain information. Editing of subsequent drafts supervised by the Communications Coordinator. Communications may include:
    • Internal staff e-mails
    • Press releases & district web site “news” stories
    • Communications to parents and the public
    • New web pages (and editing of existing pages)
    • Fliers
    • Weekly staff e-newsletters, using information sent by various district departments
    • Stories for the Ankeny Advance newsletter
    • Other non-recurring communications
  • Proofreading for grammar and punctuation
  • Upon final draft approval by the Communications Coordinator, assist in execution of:
    • Posting Web pages and news stories
    • Monitoring Web site for functionality
    • Formatting and distributing e-mails in templates
    • Formatting print materials in InDesign and Word templates
    • Collaboration with the print shop to print materials
  • Research of new Web tools and development of social media to integrate with the district Web site
  • Other duties as assigned (may include filing, researching, and clerical tasks)

RequirementsStrong writing skills. Preferably a student with a major or minor in public relations, journalism, marketing, or some other form of communications. Strong grammar and proofreading skills. Strong research skills.

Preferred Skills: Strong journalistic interviewing skills. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite. Experience with web site navigation/design or theory. Experience with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, HootSuite, and other programs. Photography or videography experience.

Graphic Designer at UW-Madison

The College of Agricultural & Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking to hire a graphic designer. We’re looking for someone with advanced print and digital design skills and an extensive portfolio of creative work on a range of periodical, marketing/advertising, and development design projects. Magazine experience is a big plus, as is experience with content in the natural sciences.

The job is the editor of the NC Insider, state government newsletter based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Insider is a MondayFriday newsletter that provides both news and opinion relating to state government and politics in North Carolina. The Insider Editor has a desk at the legislature and works there much of the year. The Insider Editor has responsibility for the Insider newsletter’s daily news package, writing original news reports and directing the efforts of the Insider’s news team while coordinating with the state news desk of The News & Observer. The Insider Editor also writes a column on state government and politics that appears in newspapers across the state.

Who I’m looking for: Journalists or professional writers for Empower MediaMarketing, a Cincinnati-based marketing agency that holds the national title of Media Agency of the Year.

What: Freelance writing assignments —in most cases, you’ll be given a sample headline and nut graph, at least as a starting point. You’ll need to do a little research, then write authoritatively and clearly.

Managing Editor/Entrepreneurial Journalist at Clay & Milk (Des Moines, IA)

Clay & Milk, a new digital source for news on Midwest startups, technology and innovation, is seeking a managing editor to be based in Des Moines, Iowa.

We’re looking for someone who can tell the story of the entrepreneurial community in Iowa and the broader Midwest with accuracy and insight. He or she should be able to write about and for the Midwest’s entrepreneurs, artists, investors and broader innovation community, but in a way that grows outside readership and interest.

The managing editor will also be responsible for Clay & Milk’s editorial vision and serve as the site’s main reporter and editor. The role will entail growing Clay & Milk’s content, handling social media, manage freelance writers and working to involve community voices in the form of guest commentary.

This position is designed for a true “entrepreneurial journalist”, someone whose interests include building and leading a nascent publication as well as covering stories from across the innovation community.


  • 0 to 5 years of reporting experience, internships or college journalism work included. Work or applicable experience with startups or related fields will be considered.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to adapt to a startup work environment.
  • A passion for technology and startups is preferred, but not required.
  • A technical efficiency and ability to sign up for new products and quickly understand how they work.
  • Great listening skills. Telling stories requires you to hear them.
