Oral history interns, Young Women’s Resource Center (Des Moines)

The Young Women’s Resource Center (YWRC) and Slay Fund for Social Justice at Drake University are teaming up to hire two students for summer and fall 2017.

What you’ll do:

Working closely with Resource Center staff, you’ll identify people with connections to the Center. These will be former board members, former staff members, women who have influenced the direction of the Center, and former clients.

As a two-person team, you will collect video oral histories from these women, use voice recognition software to transcribe their stories, and work with Professor Renee Cramer (LPS) and YWRC Director Kristin Griffith to code, qualitatively analyze, and begin interpreting the rich data you gather.

When you’ll do it:

On a flexible schedule from June 1 – November 1, 2017, working between 20 and 30 hours per week in June, July, and August and around 10 hours per week in September and October.

What you’ll earn:

$9.00 an hour; gas reimbursement at federal rates if you must drive more than 15 miles for an interview; valuable experience.

Who should apply:

Feminists with stellar communication skills who can interact confidently with a wide variety of people touched by YWRC (this is a multi-generational group that includes women from a range of socio-economic status categories, and holding diverse racial/ethnic identities).

Independent students who are good at problem-solving, who are respectful of others’ time, and who are well-organized.

People who are willing to learn how to do oral history interviews, code data, and perform both internet searches and snowball sampling to find interviewees.

The ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus, but not necessary; at least one of the two people we hire needs to have a reliable car.

How to apply:

Send an email to both renee.cramer@drake.edu and kgriffith@ywrc.org with:

A resume with a cover letter explaining why you’re interested in the position and the skills and experiences you’d bring to it. Please include the names and contact information of 2 references, and know that we might contact them prior to contacting you for an interview. Deadline is May 18; we will interview finalists between May 22 – 29, with a decision before June 1.
