This one-year position provides tactical support for various projects within the communications and public affairs team.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)
The intern will be exposed to various facets of the communications and public affairs team. The intern will provide support for internal and external communications, internal and external website maintenance, media relations, social media and other departmental projects as assigned.
Assists with drafting of articles for internal employee publications; editorial capabilities ranging from copy to comprehensive editing; media relations interest and/or background in drafting news releases, talking points and other media-related copy; drafting, publishing and assisting with the daily management of the company’s intranet and social media messages and sites; and organizational and time management skills for other departmental projects.
Under direction of the full-time staff, this position requires keeping media contacts up-to-date; serves as backup for coordinating daily news clips; participates in posting information to the company’s intranet; participates in Internet and intranet audits; works with employees in various departments throughout the organization; provides heavy proofreading assistance to each member of the department; provides administrative support and assists with other projects as needed.
Completion of three years toward a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English and/or public relations.
Background in news reporting or editing is desirable.
Basic understanding of employee communications, website maintenance, media relations and social media.
Strong proofreading and editing skills. Must be proficient in AP style.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
Basic understanding of html coding.
Understanding of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and Outlook.
Understanding of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Hoot Suite and other social media outlets.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
Available at least 40 hours per week during the summer and 20 hours per week during the school year.
