Communications Internship at PRevent Child Abuse Iowa

For over 30 years, Prevent Child Abuse Iowa has led efforts to prevent child abuse in Iowa through Advocacy, Awareness, and Assistance. PCA Iowa seeks a communications intern to assist the communications director in three marketing efforts this spring.
The intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working on a variety of communications and outreach efforts. The position will start no later than January 20, 2014, and will require a commitment of 10-15 hours per week for a total of 180 hours. Weekly hours are negotiable. Arrangements can be made for course credit, if approved by the school. A small stipend of $1,500 is available upon completion of the internship and PCA Iowa will reimburse for parking.
Aid in implementing PCA Iowa’s communications plan for the Check Off Child Abuse campaign. This campaign raises awareness of the child abuse prevention check off for Iowa taxpayers. Funds raised through this check off support the Iowa Child Abuse Prevention Program, managed by PCA Iowa. Activities include but are not limited to drafting press releases, setting up appointments for media interviews, placing radio and TV PSAs and managing social media efforts.
Support PCA Iowa’s Child Abuse Prevention Month campaign. Throughout April, PCA Iowa and its network of community partners across the state plan activities to raise awareness of child abuse prevention. Activities include but are not limited to organizing a public awareness event, gathering partner activities across Iowa and showcasing them, helping develop a video PSA and placing the PSA on TV and radio networks, and managing social media efforts.
Participate in planning and marketing the Superheroes: Pedaling for Prevention fundraiser. This first-time event will involve a family-friendly bike ride at Gray’s Lake followed by an adult ride to Cumming on May 3. Activities include but are not limited to participating on the planning committee, helping develop marketing materials to promote the ride, and managing public awareness events.
Preferred skills: Majoring in PR, communications, journalism or related field Completed at least two years of major coursework Solid writer Ability to think creatively Detail-oriented and organized Strong computer skills and knowledge of online communications The initiative to see projects through to completion Ability to collaborate with other team members
