Public Relations Intern

The Greater Des Moines Buy Fresh Buy Local campaign is hiring a public relations intern. The student will play a leadership role in running the 2013 campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to promote the members of BFBL (150 farms, restaurants, retailers, and farmers markets) through a printed food guide (35,000 copies), online newsletter (2000 plus subscription), and social media (nearly 2000 fans on our Facebook page). We also do earned media, in person events (farmers markets/health fairs/Winefest), a year-end Harvest Party with over 200 participants (fundraiser meal with local chefs, farmers, music, and partnering with Drake Dinning by Sodexo), and the Plant a Mile project, which delivers locally grown produce to area food pantries. The student intern will do significant communication work using online, social media, and e-mail tools.

Required Qualifications:
*Basic computer skills and proficiency in 2010 Microsoft Office Suite
*Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workload in a fast-paced environment
*Effective oral and written communication skills—includes writing and editing
*Ability to both work independently and take direction
*Proficiency with social media and website maintenance is required

Preferred Qualifications:
*Experience with website design and WordPress
*Experience with Artisteer 4

Student responsibilities will include:
*Developing a PR work plan
*Data entry and management
*Coordinating volunteers
*Organizing electronic files and documents
*Communicating via phone, e-mail, website, Facebook, and Twitter. Written communication will require both writing and editing.
*Event planning
*Personal interaction at farmers markets and other events

The intern can start as soon as possible but no later than May 1. Work will continue through the end of the fall semester. During the school year, the student is expected to work between 10 and 20 hours per week. In the summer the student is expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Work beyond 20 hours per week in the summer will be negotiated. This is a paid internship starting at $7.25 per hour with the potential for merit based increases to $9 per hour. This is a great opportunity for a student interested in working on a project that weaves together a variety of communication strategies with both for profit and non-profit partners.
