The purpose of this position is to serve as one of the company’s primary spokespeople and to share in the responsibilities of handling media relations activities for MidAmerican Energy Company and MidAmerican Renewables. Handles national media inquiries for MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company as a secondary backup to the media relations manager and director, communications and media relations. Disseminates proactive and reactive information to the media to support overall operational goals for the company and emergency communications. Participates in all types of media interviews with both print and broadcast media. Engages in social media efforts, including strategy development and execution. Position supports departmental projects for all media, external and employee communications.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)
Serves as a spokesperson on company matters and maintains and grows media relationships across MidAmerican Energy’s and MidAmerican Renewables’ service territories. Has media responsibility for the eastern portion of MidAmerican Energy’s service territory and supports additional media relations spokesperson duties, as needed, which can include the entire service territory.
Shares responsibility for the compilation, review and distribution of daily news clips to senior management and custom clips as requested.
Develops news releases for local, regional and national news media and writes talking points to proactively or reactively respond to media inquiries or for internal audiences.
Coordinates significant aspects of events for MidAmerican Renewables, which includes onsite coordination with the local team and advance planning.
Participates in the management of MidAmerican’s newsroom, including posting news releases and updates to the newsroom.
Provides content development and proofing support for corporate reports, corporate brochure, business and environmental fact sheets, and the Iowa State Fair publication.
Supports internal communications, including writing for and proofing of NewsLink, Power Source, ReSOURCE, MidAmerican Worldwide and stakeholder newsletters for MidAmerican Renewables. Assists with other internal communications, including safety updates.
Provides proofing support to all departments and businesses, as requested.
Communicates promptly and effectively to requests for response, research, quotes, photos, interviews and information from media contacts; gathers answers through communication with colleagues who are subject matter experts, usage of historical/archival material, or other appropriate resources.
Develops and maintains internal expert contact list.
Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or related field or equivalent work experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree.)
Five to seven years of experience in a communications or public relations function in a professional work environment.
Background in news reporting or editing is desirable, with strong proofing and editing skills. Proficient in Associated Press style.
Influencing skills to persuade or lead opinion through written and verbal communications.
Ability to work on multiple projects and with multiple internal/external clients simultaneously and under intense deadlines and environment.
Understanding of strategic communications, employee communications, special events and news media direction.
Strong oral and written communications skills and high attention to detail.
Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proficient in electronic communications and adapts easily to new computer programs and environments.
