Communications Intern

MidAmerican Energy in Des Moines is looking for a communications intern. The intern will be exposed to various facets of the corporate communications group. The intern will provide support for internal communications, media relations, social media and other departmental projects.

Position requires journalistic reporting of articles for NewsLink, Power Source and MidAmerican Worldwide employee publications; editorial capabilities ranging from copy to comprehensive editing; media relations interest and/or background for drafting news releases, talking points and other media-related copy; best business practices for social media; and organizational and time management skills for other departmental projects.

Assists with keeping media contacts up-to-date; serves as backup for coordinating morning and afternoon news clips; participates in Internet and intranet audits; will work with employees in various departments throughout the organization; will provide heavy proofreading assistance to each member of the department; will provide some administrative support and will assist with other projects, when needed.

Qualifications

Completion of three years toward a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English and/or public relations.

Background in news reporting or editing is desirable. Interest and/or background in media relations preferred.

Basic understanding of employee communications, media relations and social media.

Strong proofreading and editing skills. Must be proficient in AP style.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong technical computer skills.

Understanding of Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.

Available at least 20 hours per week during the summer and school year.
