Seeking a managing editor for a Monday through Friday newspaper, in the state capital of South Dakota, Pierre. The new managing editor will be a collegial member of the management team charged with setting the course for future success. The Capital Journal is a community newspaper and its managing editor must be a visible part of the community. The Capital Journal provides a meaningful work environment for its employees and rewards innovation and risk-taking. 
This position reports directly to the publisher. The managing editor directs reporters to cover significant news events and produce daily stories, gives the final edit to daily news and feature stories, edits stories so they are interesting, complete, accurate, fair and conform to AP style. The editor works with the assistant editor designing pages, including pagination and layout, makes judgments on appropriate story length, illustrations and placement and writes local editorials along with news stories and features when necessary. The person in this position will oversee the Capital Journal’s growing Web site, www.capjournal.com. and offers opportunities for career development.
Minimum requirements include three years’ experience on a newspaper including experience in editing and page design. Previous experience with online journalism is a plus. Qualified candidates must possess the ability to edit and critique news stories quickly and accurately, an understanding of how to integrate text and graphics effectively and the ability to paginate and design pages to enhance stories. A valid driver’s license with a good driving record and immediate access to transportation are necessary.
The Capital Journal is a morning publication that received the 2008 General Excellence award from the South Dakota Newspaper Association. Pierre, a city of 15,000, is in central South Dakota.
